Feb Athletes COUPLES EDITION: Joe & Carol Cannon

Since it’s the month of love, we decided to pick a few lovebirds who motivate each other in and out of the Shop. And we’d like to congratulate Joe and Carol Cannon, our next Fusion Athlete COUPLE for February! Joe and Carol come to the Shop for different reasons. Whether for strength, flexibility, or longevity, Joe and Carol are in this together and we’re happy to have them aboard! Keep up the great work, you two! Have you always worked out together, or did you start when you joined DBS? Carol: This is definitely a new regimen. Joe and I moved here from the East Coast, and were excited about the good, cheap food Austin has to offer. After a few months, we realized we needed to get our butts in gear. Thank you, Danes. Joe: I would say that this is certainly a new regimen for both of us. Previously, I would get all of my exercise from playing soccer or basketball a couple of times a

week, and Carol did a lot of running. I think that DBS has let us step up our game quite a bit from what we were doing before—both in terms of workout intensity and frequency. How do you motivate each other in your workouts and at home? C: Joe wakes me up in the mornings for Dane’s. By the time I roll out of bed, he has already had a cup of coffee. I’m usually the one motivating us to take the dog for a hike, though. And I’m definitely the healthier eater. J: In general, there’s not a lot of motivation needed from each other. I think we both have different workout goals that require different types of motivation, and both the coaches and the other members of DBS provide more than enough motivation and encouragement. As far as motivation at home, we both try and maintain positive attitudes about our work, our family life, etc., and that allows each of us to pick the other up if we’re going through something tough. How competitive do you feel your other half is? J: Carol is not very competitive. She will say that I’m very competitive. C: Joe is a twin, so his whole life has been about competition. Who does all the dirty workout laundry? C: Me. I’m lucky if Joe does the folding. J: I know that it ought to be an even split, but Carol ends up doing it more often than I do. Outside of the Shop, what are your active hobbies? C: We have a German Shepherd, Heidi, and she loves how dog-friendly Austin is. Our favorite day-off activity is taking Heidi for a hike at Turkey Creek. J: We get a pretty tough workout from DBS, so the extent of our exercise outside of the shop is limited to going on some long relaxing walks with our German Shepherd, Heidi. What do you feel is the biggest benefit of staying active and healthy together? How has the Shop helped with this? C: We are both much more comfortable in our bodies after working out at DBS. I can certainly say that we feel better and are happier. The Shop has most definitely played a huge role in that! When we first joined, I had no idea how hooked we both would be.

J: The biggest benefit of doing all of this together is that we can both be sore as hell at the same time (half kidding). I think it’s nice that we’re both accomplishing something, and even though we might have different goals, the flexibility of the workouts in the class format allows us both to achieve them at the same time.

IMG-20140213-00956 Which one of you is more apt to push the other one harder than they want to go? Or to come an extra day to the Shop? C: Joe. He gets competitive with himself and weights. For me, it’s more about feeling good. J: I try and make it to the shop five times a week, and Carol typically comes three times a week. I am definitely the one that pushes Carol to do more. What do you think is your spouse’s favorite movement? Which do you think they are the best at? J: Carol is a runner, so my guess is that she likes both the running and the fusion, and it works out because she is definitely best at those two parts. C: Joe and I used to both hate all cleans. Now, I think it’s one of his favorite movements because it challenges him. After class, we always disagree on which parts were easier than others. He’s pretty good at the ab exercises with the medicine balls…something I’m not so good at. He’d probably say my favorite is running, which it is—especially when we go longer than a 400, because then I beat him!
